Netflix was released for iPad but not for the iPhone. A ModMyi forum member named Knisitruck has successfully managed to hack Netflix to work on iPhone.
A thread on ModMyi explains why Netflix is not released for iPhone:
- Huge battery drain – 25% of battery for around 15min of streaming, drains pretty quick while browsing the app as well.
- Crashing – I suspect memory is the issue here, and also probably because it’s made for another device. Happened when browsing too fast through the app(lots of clicks).
- 3G Speed – Takes forever to load the app and to start streaming (does work though)
Here is an how to guide that you can follow to get Netflix app running on your iPhone if you follow it on your own risk (recommended for advanced users only):
- Download the app from app store via iTunes.
- Locate the downloaded .ipa file and change it’s extension to .zip and extract it.
- In the extracted files, go to the .app file located at “/appname/Payload/appname.app”.
- Open the info.plist and edit and change all references of OS to iphoneos3.1.2 (or the version you are using). Save and close.
- SSH (If you don’t then you can follow this simple and sweet guide to SSH), From the iPad get mediaplayer frameworks from “/System/Library/Frameworks/MediaPlayer.framework”.
- Copy them to same directory in the iPhone. A backup of existing iPhone files at that location is recommended. Change permissions to 755 recursive for directories, and inside the folder change the permissions to 644 of each file.
- Now SSH again and go to “/private/var/stash/Applications” on iPhone.
- Copy the “appname.app” file there and change permissions (775 or try 777 recursive).
- Done.
